I’m sure that many of us like to walk in the countryside, in forests or by the sea, maybe hillwalking either now or in the past. Just occasionally during some of these episodes, perhaps early in the morning, we find ourselves alone with nature, when nobody else seems to be around. We can experience an intense emotion of being in a special place at a special time, when the beauty of nature almost takes our breath away. We have to stop, and just drink in the beauty, and for that moment there is no time, the stillness and serenity of the occasion transcends everything else.
It may not last long, but that stillness is never forgotten. It is that stillness that we strive to achieve in our meditation, for we know that when we do, that serene feeling can return as we link with our ‘higher selves’. It’s amazing to think that such a lot can be achieved just by stillness, or as others might say, ‘by doing nothing’!
