A fortress is a defence, a buffer or bulwark for protection, a place of security from perceived or actual enemies. There are many such places in the United Kingdom, castles and forts that have been made throughout the centuries, even some going back before recorded history.
But we as human beings can also build fortresses emotionally and psychologically, and this can start at quite a young age. Sometimes this is an automatic and necessary defence mechanism at a particular time or for a specific circumstance, and this enables us to survive or ‘get through’ the event. However, as life evolves we often find that we need to dismantle these self-made barriers, though this in itself may be traumatic.
Removing the barriers may open us up to pain, to ridicule, to feelings of being defenceless; but it also opens us up to friendship, to laughter, to companionship, and the opportunity to experience love.
Ultimately, we are all one. When that truth is really taken on board by humanity, we will see barriers taken down between both people and nations, we will see the start of lasting peace and cooperation. We will also at last be at one with Mother Earth.
